Senator John King
The Hon. John A. King, M.P., was sworn in as the Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports in the Mia Mottley led Barbados Labour
Party Cabinet on May 27, 2018. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for the St. Philip West constituency in a landslide victory following the May 24th Barbados elections.
Born to Barbadian parents in Birmingham, U.K., Minister King returned with his parents to Barbados in 1970 at the tender age of six. He is a proud alumnus of Ebenezer Primary and the Lodge School, and credits his strong sense of community spirit and commitment to community development tjo his parents and the quality tutelage received from these institutions. His love for community led him to earn a Certificate of Merit in Principals and Practice of Social Work from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus.
In his youth, Minister King became quickly immersed in Barbados’ cultural landscape, coming to national prominence as a singer at eighteen years old. He boasts an outstanding career as a full time entertainer spanning over twenty-two years, which he carefully balanced with his public service as a social worker and welfare officer at the Government Industrial School. Minster King is a two time National Calypso Monarch, winner of the 1992 Barbados Song Contest and the Regional Song Contest with International Soca star Allison Hinds. He has shared the stage with a number of international recording artists including Air Supply, Kenny Rogers, Freddy Jackson, Steel Pulse, The Drifters, Michael Bolton and Sketa Davis.
